NM 23: JudgingJudge
Not NM23 AbstractWhat did the Bible mean when it said, "do not judge"? Does this mean we are not to judge anyone? If this is true, why did Jesus judge some people's behavior, and call them on their wrong behavior? Are we to have tolerance for the evil around us? Judge Notnm1010» There are scriptures that appear to some to say that Christians are not supposed to judge others at all. What do the scriptures say?
nm1011» What this says is that you should be very careful how you judge. Don't be a hypocrite if you judge. But does this really say and mean, judge not at all, ever? These scriptures cannot possibly mean not to discriminate (judge) between good and evil because the whole Bible tells us to do so. So what is meant here? nm1012» Let's look at Christ and Paul to see what Christ meant in Matthew 7.
Christ here says that others judge by human standards, but he does not judge by human standards. Christ Judgesnm1013» Christ doesn't say he never judges, for as we will see he did/does judge.
Here it says that Christ does judge. But his judgment is righteous for one thing he does not seek his own gain (See "God's Wrath" papers to understand righteous judgment.). Brothers not Foolsnm1014» Don't be angry with your brother or call him a fool:
nm1015» But Christ called people fools many times:
nm1016» Christ judged people and called them hypocrites:
nm1017» Christ even called a few of his apostles, "O fools" (Luke 24:25). nm1018» What did the scripture say about calling people fools?
Don't be angry with your brother, don't call him a fool. nm1019» Now we know from scripture that Christ's "brothers" and "sisters" are those in the Spirit.
As we see in the New Mind Papers you can do the will of the Father only when you have the Spirit. When Christ called a few of his apostles fools (Luke 24:25) they had not yet received the Spirit. (They received it later at the first Pentecost after Christ's resurrection.) At the time Christ called them fools, they were not yet Christ's Spiritual brothers. Thus, Christ was not wrong when he called them fools, since anyone without the Spirit, in their behavior is a fool. Who are Fools?nm1020» Who are fools, who are the foolish?
Those who do not Spiritually hear his words and thus cannot act on them are fools, are foolish, and anything they do is built on sand instead of the Rock.(¶ nm28) Ten Virgins and who was Foolishnm1021» In the parable of the ten virgins, which were foolish?
nm1022» The foolish had no oil in their lamps, that is, they did not have the Spirit, and thus were "fools." The olive oil they used in the Old Testament to anoint their kings typified the new oil of the Spirit (1John 2:20,27). The lamp is God's word, "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light unto my path" (Pss 119:105). The foolish do not have the Spirit to go with the word of God, and thus at Christ's coming the Lord will say to the foolish without the Spiritual oil, "I know you not" (Mat Pss 25:12). Paul Judged Alsonm1023» Paul judged obvious wrongs, and asked his physical churches to also judge against them:
Christians to Judge the Worldnm1024» Paul also said that since Christians are to judge the world, why cannot they judge wrong among themselves instead of going to the outside:
nm1025» Paul also cautioned others to be careful how they judged each other:
In context Paul was speaking about so-called clean and unclean food. And so he said, "I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean" (Rom 14:14). There are some things that appear evil to some, but according to the law of love are not evil. nm1026» Paul said we are to judge for ourselves what is right. We must be very careful how we do this:
nm1027 » Some social customs that have no bearing on the law of love may be considered evil in some parts of the world, avoid appearing evil if you can (1Cor 10:23,27-33). Always walk in love (Rom 13:8,10,13-14; Eph 5:2). nm1028» Accusation against Spiritual elders should not be accepted except with two or three witnesses:
nm1029» When we think we find fault with a brother, we must bring our complaint first to the brother for clarification. We may have seen something that was not there. nm1030» We must be careful how we judge, especially against a Spiritual brother. Why? Because if we call a real Spiritual brother a fool, it may be proof that we don't have the Spirit, and thus, we may be in danger of being destroyed in the fire to come (Mat 5:22; 1John 3:15; see "Last Judgment" paper [NM 24]). Those with the Spirit will recognize their brothers; those without the Spirit will not. The Last Judgment? What does the Bible mean by that phrase? Click "next" to continue.

But Peter and the apostles answered: "All silencing of discussion is an assumption of infallibility ... But the peculiar evil of silencing the expression of opinion is, that it is robbing the human race ... If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth; if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error."
